I've been a psychologist for twenty years and have worked in a range of frontline mental health services, including services supporting people with severe and enduring mental illness, personality disorder, psychosis and post disaster management.
I was increasingly drawn to trauma because, if you treat it well, a lot of other presenting problems, like anxiety and depression begin to improve as well. Working well with trauma seemed to me to be the best use of my time.
I chose to specialise in EMDR as it is so effective, does not require years and years of commitment and can be done in a very respectful way that does not result in the client having to go into the minutiae of what happened to them.
I have particular interest and experience in working with those whose jobs expose them to trauma and distress. This includes police officers, senior leaders, healthcare workers, first responders, journalists and NGO employees.
If your job involves making difficult decisions in the context where there is human suffering it pays to be psychologically well. Psychological wellbeing matters for anyone who works in a potentially traumatising context and also for those carrying significant responsibility. Your stawill also thank you for it. You deserve to get help if you need it. Your life deserves that.
I will, however work with any adult affected by trauma. This might include sexual assault, rape, complicated loss, assaults accidents or violence.
