FAQ

How do I know if therapy is right for me?

You may be dreading work, dreaming about work, or just not enjoying life outside of work because of what you do. It could also be that past events are affecting your ability work or enjoy life in the way that you used to.

What happens in the first session?

We will do an assessment. The assessment will also include talking about experiences from your past which still may be affecting you. We will go at your own pace. You do not have to divulge all that distresses you when we first meet.

Do I have to talk about everything that happened?

It is helpful for me to know the extent of the events that you have experienced and the nature of them, but you don’t have to go into exhaustive detail.

 Does online EMDR work?

Yes, it works really well. EMDR can also be very tiring. It can be helpful to be able to rest afterwards and not to have to travel. I don’t use software or fancy gimmicks for the eye movements. You’ll just need a decent internet connection.

Do you do intensive EMDR?

Yes, I do. This means a move away from one session a week to either daily or blocks of a few hours at a time. This allows for a faster resolution of the issue and if you only have limited time for sessions, it’s easier to organise.  I don’t do more than three hours with one person, as it’s very draining, and within that block I do offer a break.

How many sessions will I need and how often?

It’s hard to say. It depends how much you have experienced. I would say a minimum of three sessions to do a full assessment and do some processing. The number of sessions is entirely led by you. In my experience, my clients know when they have had enough.

I don't think I have PTSD. Can therapy still help?

Yes, I’m a highly experienced counselling psychologist and have experience of working with a huge range of psychological difficulties. I offer counselling which is effective for working with stress and burnout and other presentations. If you need to just talk, that’s totally fine.

Do you only work with police officers and other professionals?

Absolutely not! I have a particular interest in working with professionals who are exposed to trauma but I’ll work with any adult, who has been affected by traumatic life events, whether sexual abuse, rape, bereavement, assaults, accidents or other types of violence

Is therapy confidential?

Yes, but I will need the details of your GP, any medication you’re on and next of kin. I am also bound by law and my code of ethics to also disclose crime or safeguarding issues. I am legally bound to break confidentiality if I think that you or someone else is at risk of harm. I will do this with your full knowledge if possible. I am also legally bound by GDPR policies and will keep your data confidential and safe.

How do I get started?

Drop me an e-mail, and I’ll arrange a free 20 minute phone consultation. This gives us the opportunity to see if I’m what you’re looking for.

 How much is a session?

I charge £120 per 60 minute session or part thereof.
